The Kid Proof Christmas Decor Guide
Christmas is hands down one of the prettiest holidays in terms of decor. You’ve got all the sparkle, twinkle, and light on every surface possible. After I became a mom that spark died down pretty quickly. Mostly because my decorations were broken within seconds by my then-active toddler. I now needed to enter the world of kid-proof Christmas decor.
Bonus! If you have pets that love climbing into your tree these tips will make your Christmas tree pet proof.
Check out some of my favourite Christmas trees at the end of this post.
During that time the options for kid and childproof Christmas ornaments and decorations were slim pickings with a few scratched up red and green baubles and lots of paper and wicker….but no sparkle. I’m rounding up my tips and favourite sources for kid proof christmas tree decor with all the sparkle.
Use Shatterproof ornaments as your accent colour.
I tried decorating with only one set of shatterproof Christmas tree ornaments, and it was the saddest charlie brown tree ever. Shatterproof ornaments aren’t as sparkly as glass ornaments but they do come in a wide variety of colours and texture. Use this as your first decor layer in setting up your colour scheme.

2. Add sparkle with Acrylic.
Replace glass with a well-made acrylic ornament. These will pick up and reflect light adding in that missing sparkle. Without fail, my kids reached for the glass ornaments every time. Now the acrylics are their favorite and I don’t have to worry about them breaking or having sharp edges.
3. Use Ribbon instead of Tinsel.
If you’ve experienced a toddler picking all the tinsel off of a Christmas tree and the clean up aftermath. You probably won’t even want to use it again. At least until they’re in college. Using a wide trim ribbon will give you the same look without the mess. Pro tip cut 2-3' foot pieces and twist them into the branches to give the illusion as if they are wrapping around the entire tree. If they pull at the ribbon a small piece comes out instead of the entire tree toppling over.
4. Add texture with 3D ornaments or decor pieces.
Beaded ornaments, decorative picks and sprays are a great way to add dimension and texture to your kid proof christmas tree. While these are usually shatter proof the ends are pointed wire to make it easier to stick into your tree or garlands. This can be a dangerous for little ones. A tip is to apply a coat of hot glue to the ends of each pick to encase the raw edge, bonus this also makes it a little more “grippy” when placing in the christmas tree.
5. Double up on all ornaments and decor pieces being used.
I normally like a medium full ( is that an official term?) decorated christmas tree but by christmas it looks bare with all the re -decorating the kids have done and of course ornaments that have somehow walked away. Add more that you’d like and by christmas it will be at the perfect amount. Thank me in the new year.

When it comes to finishing touches in a home, nothing sets the tone quite like the right curtains. Before discovering Two Pages Curtains, I had tried several options hoping to find the perfect balance of light, privacy, and style, but nothing truly checked every box.
